MALAWI: MAN ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTING TO SELL HIS UNCLE

Nkhotakota — 19-year-old man Mateyo Chimphoyo is in police custody at Nkhotakota Police Station for attempting to offer on sale his uncle to a businessman in Nkhotakota district.

Nkhotakota Police Spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino said according to Maxwell Malema, 40, who hails from Matapira Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mazengera in Lilongwe, he was approached by the suspect during the afternoon hours of November 7, 2013 with the offer.
"Malema who works at Kandikole maize mill at Bzyobzyo Trading Centre in Nkhotakota said when he attended to him, the suspect urged him to go to a secret place for a discussion.
"There, Malema learnt that the suspect was offering for sale his uncle, Sainani Levison, at a price of MK 1.5 million," he said.
Lubrino said Malema was annoyed to hear this story and he wanted Chimphoyo get arrested.
"Malema then persuaded Chimphoyo to leave his bicycle behind and come back again. While away, Malema informed members of community policing from the area and Benga Police Unit.
"The suspect came again on November 9, 2013 where he got arrested at the maize mill," Lubrino said.
The police publicist said the suspect has told police that he was indeed trying to sell his uncle so that he could solve some of his financial problems.
Meanwhile, the police have opened a case of conduct likely to cause bleach of peace, which is contrary to section 181 of the Penal Code. Chimphoyo will appear before Nkhotakota Magistrate Court soon to answer the charges.
